Food To Your Table was founded by Joan Balaban and Amy Silberstein, both longtime Newton residents, who for many years have been engaged with helping their community in various ways.
Joan and Amy teamed up to help their fellow Newton residents gain access to fresh fruits and vegetables, motivated by their concern that everyone should have access to healthy foods, not just those who can afford it.
Witnessing first hand that local farmers were growing more food than they could sell, resulting in significant amounts of wasted food, Joan and Amy proceeded to network in the Boston area with agencies working to fill the gap where food insecurity was identified to better understand the scope of the problem.
Eventually they approached officials from the City of Newton to gain a perspective on the situation in their own city. It was clear that there was not a structure in place to donate fresh produce to Newton residents in need.
Joan and Amy approached the farmers at the weekly Newton Farmers Market as well as the farmer from the Newton Community Farm. They were incredibly supportive and willing to donate their extra produce. The farmers were pleased to have an avenue to help. Food To Your Table was born out of a desire by Joan and Amy to "bring food from those that grow it to those who need it."
